For me, Valentine’s Day is a bigger candy holiday than Halloween… Out of all the confectionary treats deemed not so sweet by most of the world, no indulgence is more maligned, save candy corn, than conversation hearts. They are also my all-time favorite. I polished off a half-pound in one sitting on Valentine’s morning.

Critics say that they are only useful in decorating greeting cards, that they don’t melt in your mouth and make your day! Chalk it up to ignorance.

My favorite brand is NECCO’s Sweethearts. They are chalky and delicious and melt in your mouth. And as a self-dubbed wordsmith I appreciate how they change and update with the times. “E-MAIL ME,” i.e. Did this “wordsmith use that i.e.-thingy correctly?

RIP Nello Ferrara

A sad moment in confectionary history is upon us today… My girlfriend informed me just now that Nello Ferrara, the creator of one of my all-time favorite candies, RED HOTS, has passed. He was the founder of Chicago-based Ferrara Pan Candy Company. I’m not a big candy guy but I buy this stuff by the case, and the lady has to hide it from me and parse it out over time so I don’t overdose. These delicious cinnamon treats aren’t made by Tootsie®, but this news is a real tear jerker for candy lovers. More info here.
